This is what you can do right now to avoid depression

This is what you can do right now to avoid depressionThis is what you can do right now to avoid depressionFor some people, the perfect evening is going to bed by 9 p.m. so they can be up for an early morning workout. But for others, that ideal night includes way more activity - maybe even binge-watching The West Wing on Netflix until 3 a.m.?The divide between early birds and night owls has long been established. Early birds get the worm, but night owls always seem to have more fun. The most successful people talk about waking up in the wee hours of the morning to start their days. But theres a reason why people are so interested in these4 a.m. routines - theyre foreign to readers who like to sleep during those saatkorn hours.Though some of the differences between early birds and the rest of the world are fairly apparent, theres one distinction that may not come to mind off the bat. Elucidated by research this year, it seems that middle-aged and older women who are early birds are l ess inclined to experience depression than the rest of their peers.Over four years, researchers at the University of Colorado - Boulder and other major institutions analyzed data about more than 32,000 nurses who averaged 55 years old and who in 2009 were depression-free. As time passed, nurses who were early birds had a 12-27% lower risk of developing depression than those who said they were intermediate types - neither early birds nor night owls. People who preferred later schedules saw the opposite effect they were more inclined to experience depression, though those results werent statistically significant. This means that at least for middle-aged to older women, how early or late they rise may impact their likelihood of depressive symptoms - even if the influence is modest. So what should late risers do?Cline Vetter, director of the Circadian and Sleep Epidemiology Laboratory (CASEL) at CU Boulder and lead author of the study, says that night owls can try to adjust their sche dules so they get enough sleep, exercise, and time in the daylight. After all, though some women may be more inclined toward a certain sleep schedule, they have complete control over when they get up and go to bed.Setting that 6 a.m. alarm may make you groan, but if its for your health, it could be worth it. And just think of how much youll get done before the sunrise

5 Career Lessons from First Jobs - The Muse

5 Career Lessons from First Jobs - The Muse5 Career Lessons from First JobsMy first job was as a playground leader. I spent my teenage summers working at a park about two miles from my house. A few of my close friends worked there, too, and it was a blast. But while some may say its an easy job because I just got to hang out with kids all day, that was far from the truth. With only 10 leaders and an average of 80 kids- sometimes over 100- there were a ton of different tasks to keep track of. And after five summers working there, I learned a lot. I learned that cheese puffs are addicting, some crafts are actually really hard (even though they say ages three and up), and that Kool-Aid can stain your hands a different color for the whole day. But most of all, I learned the importance of being organized in order to manage several things at once, with the ultimate goal of keeping the kids alive. I learned how to go to bed at a normal time so I could be early for work each morning. And when I became a head leader for the last two summers of that gig, I learned that getting a promotion isnt all rainbows and unicorns- sure, I got a raise (50 cents an hour- woohoo) and more responsibility, but I also all of a sudden felt an immense amount of pressure to prove to my fellow leaders, who were also good friends, that I deserved the position. You may not think your first job meant much, but every single opportunity teaches you qualities that are absolutely vital throughout the rest of your career. These five highly successful individuals shared the most valuable thing they learned from their first positions on LinkedIn recently, and I strongly recommend you use these tidbits to grow in your career, too. 1. Embrace the ChallengesNow is the time to choose the rocky road instead of the paved path. You may have to move many obstacles on your journey to success, but when you arrive you will be much stronger for the effort. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United NationsChoosi ng the easy way out usually only pays off in the short-term, not in the long run and this is especially true for your career, too. The first embassy appointment Ban Ki-moon chose was understaffed, which presented him with a lot of challenges. But it was tackling these head on that got him to where he is today, as he wouldnt have learned how to overcome them if hed chosen a more comfortable position at another embassy. So, dont shy away from the opportunities that seem hard to you. Because even though they may seem tedious and frustrating at times, youll be building a solid foundation for the rest of your career. And choosing the easy road? Well, it will be easy, but it will also be really boring and not get you very far.2. Be CourageousMany of you think the keys you need for success depend on how you grew up financially, who you know, where you went to school, or having the luxury to accept an unpaid or low-paying internship. Wrong, wrong, wrong. What makes you stand out in this wor ld far above anyone else is when others look at you and can see that spark in your eye, hear the passion in your words, feel the love that you have for others, and witness that fearless energy to conquer any task in front of you. Suze Orman, Television Host, Author, Motivational Speaker, ProducerOrman had nothing when she first abfluged pursuing her dream. And when she received $50,000 from friends and neighbors to start her own restaurant, she lost it (ouch). But she didnt let any setbacks, small or colossal, stop her from forging ahead. Having the courage to figure out how to overcome any obstacles you may come across is key to following your dreams and finding success. 3. Learn Just as Much About the People as You Do the JobI learned so much about people from all different backgrounds, understood the importance of getting to work on time, sticking to a schedule, being patient and inclusive, and navigating group dynamics. It became so clear to me that everyone, no matter what thei r limitations, has something to offer. Part of our jobs as human beings is recognizing that. Thats what I learned that summer. Katie Couric, Yahoo Global News AnchorIts not just those in the customer tafelgeschirr industry who need to learn people skills- its everyone. Because every single job involves working with others to some extent. And understanding how people can be different than you and see things from other perspectives than you do is extremely important. Once you understand how someone else ticks, itll be so much easier to figure out how to best work with him or her. Were not all the same- and that is a good thing. 4. Dont Underestimate the Value of Any SkillFrom this job and the others, I learned things like punctuality, leadership and teamwork. Some people call these soft skills, but Ive never really liked that term. It suggests that theyre not very important, but the truth is theres nothing soft about showing up on time ready to work. Tom Perez, Secretary of Labor at t he U.S. Department of LaborWhen writing our resumes and cover letters, theres a lot of emphasis on the experience we have and the skills weve honed. But whats missing from these pieces of paper are the basic characteristics you need to be a good worker and while these may not provide you with the specific experience you need for a certain job, they totenstill apply to virtually every position out there. After all, no matter where youre working and what youre doing, no manager likes a chronically tardy employee, right?5. Always Make Time to Listen- and Listen WellActive listening is a vital skill for any leader. It builds and strengthens relationships between customers and brands, or managers and employees. It helps leaders appreciate that everyone has something to contribute to the business, the brand, the reputation. Meg Whitman, CEO at Hewlett Packard EnterpriseIt doesnt matter how long youve been working or how far youve moved up the ladder- youre never going to know everything. And if you try to act like you do, well, that just leads to sub-par results. But if you keep your ears open to everyone who has something to say, youll end up with the tools to put together a top notch product or solve some of the most critical issues. You never know where that first job will take you- Barack Obamas first gig was scooping ice cream, after all (which sounds more fun than being responsible for an entire country)- but if you take the time to learn from it, its bound to take you in any direction you end up wanting to go. Even if that path is a little rocky or windy- youll get there. What did you learn from your first job? Tell me on Twitter

Social Media A Tool for Third Party Recruiters - Spark HireRecently, a fellow experienced recruiter made a comment to me that I completely disagree with. Third partey recruiters dont need to be active on social media. While I greatly respect my fellow recruiter, I believe that social media is one of many valuable tools forthird party recruiters. There are 4 benefits to third party recruiters when it comes to being active on social media.1. Networking is importantAs a third party recruiter, it is important that you are always networking with potential clients and top talent. Social media provides an excellent source of networking, allowing many recruiters access to clients and candidates that they may not have had access to otherwise. In addition, staying up to date with industry related news and happenings through other recruitment connections are very important to third party recruiters. Via social media platforms such as Twitter, I was quite often one of the first to learn of company acquisitions, downsizings, or closures. Through this valuable knowledge, a recruiter is able to be one of the first to contact top talent at behauptung companies to discuss potential opportunities and build strong relationships with this talent.2. Gain access to passive candidatesIt is well known throughout the recruiting industry that social media has helped us to make great leaps and strides when it comes to access to top talent. Top talent who may not have their resume posted, or who have not made it into your referral pipeline, is more than likely on social media and may be open to considering new opportunities. Why not stay ahead of the game and build relationships with passive candidates as you go?3. Improve your referral pipelineBuilding a solid social media network with top talent in your industry focus can help you to grow your referral pipeline quickly. Having access to a strong network can help you to quickly identify the top talent your client is searching for through r eferrals you receive from private messages and posted updates within your network.4. Advertise your opportunitiesWith so many people utilizing social media every day, posts can travel at lightening fast speeds. In the world of third party recruitment, quality as well as speed is of the essence. Social media is an excellent way for you to quickly get the word out that you have a new opportunity. Not only are you able to do this quickly, but for the most part you are able to do this for free Why not take advantage of free advertisement? What do you think should third party recruiters be active on social media?
